For a nation with 22 scheduled languages, a new language for almost every corner of the country, the establishment of Hindi, written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India was a major event.

On September 14, 1949, ever extended protests and demonstrations, Hindi became the official language of the country and since then, the date September 14 is celebrated as 'Hindi Diwas'. The occasion of Hindi Diwas is marked annually as a celebration of the Hindi language. Government offices, firms, schools and other institutions celebrate Hindi Diwas with great enthusiasm.

Hindi Diwas holds great significance for India, as it stands as a patriotic reminder that despite the myriad languages, dialects, and cultures across the country, the country as a whole is represented by the official language of Hindi.

The date designated as Hindi Diwas, September 14, 1949 also marked the 50th birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha, a famous artist who made important contributions to highlight the importance of Hindi and pushed it to become the official language of the country.

Initially, the Indian Constitution and laws were written in English until Hindi was added as an official language. Simha designed the final Constitution of India which became known as one of the most beautiful constitutions in the world.

Finally, on January 26, 1950, and Under the Article 343 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi language written in Devanagari script was adopted as the official language of the nation. While India has two 'official' languages, namely, Hindi and English, there is no designated 'national language'.
