Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who turns 68 on Monday, has taken India by storm with his 'Modi Wave' helping sweep more than a dozen states into the kitty of BJP and its allies, resulting in Opposition parties coming together to fight the charisma of PM Modi.

Born in Gujarat's Vadnagar on September 17, 1950, Narendra Modi as a child helped his father sell tea and later ran his own tea stall. He was introduced to the right-wing Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 8 years and became a full time worker for the RSS in 1971 at the age of 21 years.

In 1985, Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has RSS as its parent organisation. Rising through the ranks of the BJP, Modi became the General Secretary in 2001 and was became Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, due to the failing health of then-Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel.

Despite controversy over the 2002 Gujarat riots, Narendra Modi continued as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for 13 years, till 2014 when he became the Prime Minister of India after the BJP won a massive victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP won a majority in the Lok Sabha, the first time a single party had since 1984, and Modi himself was elected from the Varanasi constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been hailed for several initiatives, including raising foreign direct investment, growth of economy, increased spending on infrastructure and boost to sanitation. However, he has been criticised for the radical demonetisation of 2016 and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017. The Congress has also accused PM Modi of a scam in the purchase of the Rafale jets from France.

This year, PM Modi is celebrating his birthday with a 2-day visit to his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi where he will be interacting with children in the Narur village on Monday and inaugurating several development projects on Tuesday.

"Among the projects are Integrated Power Development Scheme for Puraani Kashi and an Atal Incubation Centre at the BHU. The projects for which the foundation stone will be laid is the Regional Ophthalmology Centre at the BHU," a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

On the occasion of PM Modi's birthday, even Opposition party leaders and his harshest critics wished him on Twitter.
