The Economics Prodigy, Dr Manmohan Singh turns 85 on September 26, this year. The man of few words has served the nation as Prime Minister for two-consecutive terms, even though his initial nomination for the post came in as a surprise to the man himself.

Following the 2004 Lok Sabha Elections, when Congress President Sonia Gandhi proposed Singh's name for the prime ministerial post, party members were taken aback by her decision but supported her nonetheless. Apparently, the former PM has earlier criticised the party for the mass Sikh killings in 1984.

The renowned economist was born in the Gah village of Punjab in 1932 and received his masters from Punjab University. Having received his doctorate from Oxford University, Manmohan was among the first Indian economists to represent India on an International level.

His 'silent' mode might have been criticised by many Indian citizens but they seldom acknowledge that it was Dr Manmohan Singh under whose supervision India was able to pass the historic Economic reforms in 1991. He served as the Indian Finance Minister then and together with PV Narasimha Rao brought India out of a severe Economic crisis.

He has also lead the nation in the India-US civil nuclear deal which resulted in the country's unmatched economic growth of 9%. His efforts were responsible for successful initiatives like MNREGA and RTI.

The Congress leader has served the longest in office after the first Indian PM, Jawaharlal Nehru. Controversies might have followed him like a shadow but his achievements cannot be neglected. His involvement in the 2G spectrum and the Coalgate scam has raised many questions on his leadership.

His personal integrity was never questioned during his tenure as the India Prime Minister but his silence on the accusations thrown at him gave away to the critics for bringing him down.

Many Indian leaders including PM Narendra Modi and former Delhi CM, Sheila Dixit wished the legend on his birthday.
