Gujarat Elections Phase II: 68.7 percent Voter Turnout Recorded

The second and final phase of voting for the Gujarat state assembly elections for 93 seats across 14 districts in north and central Gujarat began on Thursday, with around 2.22 crore (2,22,96,867) voters registered to vote at 25,319 polling booths. At the end of the day 68.7 percent voter turnout was recorded in the state.

The first phase of the Gujarat elections for 89 seats was completed on December 9 with a voter turnout of 66.75 percent. The counting of votes for all 182 seats of Gujarat and the 68 seats of Himachal Pradesh which went to poll in November, will take place on December 18.

A total of 851 candidates are being fielded for the 93 seats in Gujarat phase II elections, with 93 BJP candidates, 91 Congress candidates, 28 NCP candidates, 75 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates, 8 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates and 350 independents.

A record number of 33 candidates are in the fray for the Mehsana seat, including Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel.

The districts going to polls include Banaskantha, Patan, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Panchmahal, Dahod, Kheda, Anand, Vadodara and Chhota Udepur.

Leading up to the Gujarat elections, the Congress and the BJP have been engaging in aggressive campaigning and brining in star campaigners, as the Congress attempts to make a return to the state after 22 years, dethroning the ruling BJP.
