Goa's town and country planning minister Vijai Sardesai called the domestic tourists of the state 'scum of the earth' on Friday. In his blunt statements, he blamed the North Indians for multiplying the problem of garbage with their indecent approach.

Speaking at the Goa BizFest in Bambolim, Sardesai gave away from highly objectionable statements including, "Today, we have almost six times the population coming into Goa. Those tourists are not the top-end tourists, but scum of the earth."

He cautioned the locals against the North Indians who, according to him, are trying to "recreate Haryana in Goa".  "We cannot make Goa another Gurugram. The north Indian states are responsible for the problems that Goa has today," he said.

"The people coming from those states actually want to recreate Haryana in Goa," Sardesai added. The minister went ahead and contradicted the state's CM Manohar Parrikar's vision of bringing in over one crore tourists and conveyed that the government should focus on foreign tourists.

The minister very graciously also allowed the upper-class Indian tourists to visit Goa but expressed his displeasure over Goa's current quality of tourists. He further alleged that the heavy rush of North Indian tourists has multiplied authorities' problem of tackling the issue of garbage and cleanliness.

Pointing at the problem of trash on the beach and in cities, Sardesai highlighted the lack of proper mechanism to control or educate the short-term tourists for keeping Goa clean. To control such activities, he conveyed, "We will have to bring in laws which will tax you, fine you and compel you to follow the law."
