The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Friday in the murder case of journalist Gauri Lankesh took into custody an activist of Hindu Yuva Sena K.T Naveen Kumar.

Kumar, a resident of Birur, in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, was arrested by Bengaluru Police on February 19 for illegal possession of bullets.

He was then transferred to the SIT from the Bengaluru Police on Friday evening after the SIT approached the court for Kumar's custody.

"K.T. Naveen Kumar has been taken into police custody by the SIT for questioning," the chief investigation officer of the SIT said on Friday.

The reports of SIT said, "He resembled the man who conducted a recce on September 3 and the morning of September 5."

Assistant Public Prosecutor Nirmala Rani presented a remand plea to the court seeking police custody of Kumar for eight days in order to unearth the larger conspiracy and materials used in the crime.

Rani said, "At present, only one accused has been named. Others will be added after investigations. This suspect was traced on the basis of a CCTV footage."

Kumar’s arrest is the first major breakthrough in the case. The SIT was formed in September last year to probe the killing.

The killing of the journalist followed outrage of many sections of the society who believed that she was killed due to her views against right-wing ideology. However, the motive behind the case is yet to be established by the SIT, which is probing a family angle too.

Gauri Lankesh was shot with a 7.65 mm country-made pistol in the driveway of her home in west Bengaluru on the evening of September 5, 2017, by an unidentified man wearing a helmet. The suspect who rode the getaway motorcycle was also unidentified.
