Gauri Lankesh Murder Case: Shooter Confesses To Murder Post Arrest By SIT

After 8 months of probe, journalist Gauri Lankesh's murder case is on the verge of being cracked. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested the main accused Parashuram Vagmere (26) and produced him before the court on Tuesday.

The accused has confessed to pulling the trigger on Lankesh who was shot dead by unknown assailants outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on September 5, 2017. SIT has sought 14-day custody of the accused who hails from Sindagi, Vijayapura district, Karnataka.

On Monday, SIT had arrested a Marathi-speaking man from Maharashtra who is suspected of having a hand in the murder of Gauri Lankesh. Upon being asked about the ongoing investigation and details, a senior SIT officer told TOI, "We need to question him before making a comment."

Revealing a few details about the arrested accused, a SIT source said, " One of our teams picked up the Marathi-speaking man in his late 30s. He is 5’1” tall and weighs about 75-80kg. No pistol or firearms were found on him."

Another suspect identified as Anil Kumar was produced before a local court and his statement was taken under Section 64 of the CrPC, which can act as a means of evidence. The earlier charge sheet stated that Naveen confessed to plotting Gauri’s killing with Praveen.

While Naveen wasn't present in Bengaluru during Gauri's murder, he knew about the plan. Four accused - Praveen, Amol Kale, Amit Degvekar and Manohar Yadave who were arrested for plotting rationalist K S Bhagawan's murder are also under the scanner for killing activist-journalist.

Gauri had frequently expressed her critical opinions about right-wing Hindu extremist groups in her Kannada weekly, Lankesh Patrike. Her murder triggered an outrage among the masses who demanded justice for the journalist who voiced her opinions without fear.
