Around 6 gunmen overtook a car of a newly married couple on NH-58 late on Friday and shot the 18-year-old bride Mehvish Praveen. Along with the groom Shahzeb and three family members, she was going to the groom’s house in Muzaffarnagar barely hours before of their marriage held in Ghaziabad’s Nahla village on Friday, media reported on Sunday.

“When the gunmen pointed out the gun at me, Mehvish screamed with fear. They instantly shot in her chest as they feared that her scream would alert the people who were passing by on the busy highway,” Shahzeb said.

This incident created fear in the region and the police of three districts- Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad and Meerut have been pressed into action. After completing all the rituals of marriage at bride’s place, the couple left for the groom’s native place. They were an hour away from their destination when the tragedy took place.

Praveen died on the spot. The men took away all the cash, jewellery and car from the spot in Meerut’s Mataur village in Daurala area.

The family buried Mehvish at her native place in Ghaziabad on Saturday.

“In CCTV footage accessed from the toll plaza in Daurala, we have spotted the car closely following the victim’s vehicle. The car following the victim’s vehicle bore a Delhi registration number plate. The number was to be registered in the name of Meerut based businessman Pradeep Bansal,” said SP Diwedi.
