India's former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (93) was admitted to the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a "routine check-up" on Monday. The senior BJP leader was hospitalised on the advice of doctors.

"He has been admitted for routine check-up and investigations. He will be under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS," ANI quoted a source. Guleria will personally keep an eye on Vajpayee's health and investigate his progress.

As per reports, Vajpayee's condition is normal but the decision on his discharge is yet to be taken by AIIMS. Congress President Rahul Gandhi also reached at the hospital facility to inquire about the former Prime Minister's health on Monday evening.

The AIIMS director has served as personal physician to Vajpayee for over three decades. Since 2009, the 93-year-old former PM has been away from public eye. That year, he was admitted to hospital just 48 hours before a party's leadership meeting in Nagpur.

Once an active politician who is regarded as one of the tallest leaders of BJP for being the first head of government from outside the Congress party to serve a full five-year term has cut himself from public life and confined himself to four walls of his house.

Recipient of India's highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan, Bajpayee entered politics during the Quit India movement in 1942. His birthday on December 25 is celebrated as Good Governance Day by the BJP-led government.
