Former CM Sheila Dikshit Appointed As Delhi Congress Chief, After Ajay Maken’s Resign

After the resignation of Ajay Maken from the post of Delhi Congress chief, the party was looking for a new face.

Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit was appointed as the new president of Delhi unit of Congress, on Thursday.

The former Delhi Congress chief congratulated Dikshit on her appointment. He said the Congress will play the role of opposition against the governments in the national capital and at the Centre.

Reacting on the latest development, Ajay Maken took to Twitter and said “I congratulate Shiela Dikshit jail for being appointed the DPCC (Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee) President. I am confident that under her leadership, we will play the role of strong opposition to Modi & Kejriwal governments”.

Congress's PC Chacko also confirmed the development. Sources said she will have a few working presidents to assist her.

The 80-year-old Congress veteran will be assisted by three working presidents. "Sheila Dikshit appointed Delhi Congress President. Devendra Yadav, Rajesh Lilothia, Haroon Yusuf appointed working presidents," Congress' PC Chacko said.

Ajay Maken, along with AICC in-charge of Delhi affairs PC Chacko met Rahul Gandhi to submit his resignation letter on Thursday.

Ajay, who has been suffering from "painful orthopedic ailment", is believed to have cited health reasons for his resignation.

 Dikshit served as Delhi chief minister for three consecutive terms till 2013 when the Congress lost power.

The change of guard in Delhi Congress assumes significance as the party is gearing up to brighten its fortunes in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, considering that the BJP had bagged all the seven seats at stake in the capital in the last general elections.
