Former BJP Leader & Senior Journalist Chandan Mitra Joins Trinamool Congress

Former BJP lawmaker and senior journalist Chandan Mitra joined Trinamool Congress on Saturday. Mitra resigned from BJP on July 17.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee confirmed the joining of Former Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra, Former CPM MP Moinul Hasan, Congress's Sabina Yasmin and Mizoram advocate-general Biswajit Deb in the ruling party of West Bengal while addressing the Martyrs Rally.

The two-time Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra is one of the biggest names who left the Bhartiya Janta Party. He was elected to the Upper House from Madhya Pradesh in 2010. He contested West Bengal assembly elections from Hooghly seat for BJP but he lost his seat there.

Former BJP minister was believed to have been unhappy after being sidelined when PM Modi and Amit Shah took the command. He expressed his displeasure on a number of occasions.   

Mitra began his career as a journalist at the Statesman House. He is currently the chief editor of the Pioneer newspaper in Delhi.  

Martyrs Day, July 21

The Trinamool Congress observes 21st July as Martyrs Day, on this day the party holds a mega rally every year. The Martyrs’ Day rally is organized by the party every year on July 21 in the memory of 13 Youth Congress activists killed in police firing in 1993 during the Left Front regime in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was a leader of the Youth Congress at that time.
