As Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi campaigns in Gujarat, BJP National President Amit Shah reached the long-running constituency of the Gandhi family, Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, which has been the parliamentary constituency of Rahul Gandhi since 2004.

Addressing a rally in Amethi, Shah accused 'Rahul Baba' of ignoring developments in his own constituency and in Uttar Pradesh, calling him 'Rahul Baba' to highlight Rahul Gandhi's dynastic connections and his status as a 'coddled' Nehru-Gandhi scion.

"For 70 years, you have put your faith in one family, nothing came of it, now put your faith in the BJP and Modi," said Amit Shah.

"We are going to come to you in 2019 and ask for your vote," said Shah.

"But when we do that, we will come to you with a report card of what we have done. We will say we have given all of you electricity, a gas connection, toilets. ...Rahul baba, what have your grandmother, your father and you done for Amethi?" asked the BJP president.

Amit Shah highlighted that despite losing from Amethi in 2014, BJP's Smriti Irani has "done more for Amethi" than Rahul has.

"I've never seen such a case where the representative of a seat ignores his Parliamentary constituency as much as this. And then you have Smriti behen who has embraced the people of Amethi even though she lost from here," said Shah.

Since the Amethi constituency was formed in 1966, it has been a Congress stronghold with Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi having represented it. Only one non-Nehru dynasty Congress leader was elected by Amethi, Vidyadhar Bajpai in 1966, and only once has a non-Congress MP been elected, namely Ravindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party in 1977.
