The Uttar Pradesh police have registered an FIR against Actor-turned-politician and Congress IT cell head Divya Spandana for tweeting an offensive photo against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday.

Divya Ramya who is also the chief of Congress’ social media and digital communications took to his Twitter account and photoshopped a photograph of PM Modi painting "chor" on his wax statue with a hashtag "Chor PM Chup Hai" over the Rafale jet controversy.

The case has been registered in Gomtinagar Police station against the Congress social media head under Section 67 of The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and Section 124A 9sedition) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on a complaint filed by lawyer and activist Syed Rizwan Ahmad on Tuesday.

In a tweet, the lawyer posted a photocopy of the FIR on Twitter alleging that the FIR was filed as Ramya's post incited hatred against the Prime Minister. He also wrote, "Twitter friend and I have initiated the legal proceedings as you (PM Modi) are the country’s Prime Minister and not of any specific group".

Following the FIR, he asked the BJP to follow the case. He tweeted, “#1My humble knowledge says that Defamation in the capacity of Individual is not maintainable..BJP as an organization is more fit to initiate.”

The Congress has been a part of a continued onslaught on the Modi government over the alleged corruption and favouritism in the Rafale fighter jet deal.
