An FIR has been lodged against 4 people for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Dalit icon Dr B R Ambedkar in a Facebook post and for assaulting a Dalit youth in the Reoti area of UP, police said on Monday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Sriparna Gongulee said to PTI that the FIR has been lodged against Durgesh Pandey, Ankesh Pandey, Ritesh and Tej Narain for derogatory Facebook posts.

The FIR was lodged under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, IT Act and relevant provisions of the IPC on Sunday based on a complaint from Shiv Prakash Paswan who was assaulted by the 4 accused.

The derogatory posts against Dr Ambedkar come 3 days after two of his statues were found vandalised in Madhya Pradesh on April 6. One statue was found damaged in the Satna district while another was found damaged in the Bhind district.

The treatment of Dalits has been in controversy since the SC announced its directive diluting the SC/ST Act by delaying the instant arrest of the accused in favour of an arrest after investigation, citing misuse of the SC/ST Act. Dalit communities launched a 'Bharat Bandh' protest on April 2 against the SC ruling diluting the SC/ST Act, and the subsequent clashes resulted in the death of 9 people.
