The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed UP and Central government for not providing essential security measures to the historical monument Taj Mahal and described it as a "hopeless cause."

The Supreme Court said, “Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it.” The Court was hearing the petition regarding the proper maintenance of Taj Mahal in the presence of high-level pollution in Agra.

The judge hearing the petition said, “Taj Mahal is more beautiful than the Eiffel Tower and could have solved the country's foreign exchange problem.”

"Eighty million people go to watch Eiffel Tower which looks like a TV Tower. Our Taj is more beautiful. If you had looked after it your foreign exchange problem would have been solved," he added.

The Court also asked the Central government to prepare an action plan for Taj Mahal protection and ordered the formation of a special committee to find out the corrective measures.

According to the Supreme Court, the UP government had ignored the Parliamentary standing committee’s report to protect the monument.

The Court announced that it will start hearing the matter from July 31 on a daily basis to discuss how to protect the monument from the pollution in Agra.
