The name Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar is famous across India as the father of the Constitution and as a Dalit icon, but in Uttar Pradesh, his name is set to get a revision. The state government on Wednesday passed an order asking all departments and high court benches in UP to replace 'Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar' with 'Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar' in all documents and records.

Dr Ambedkar himself had signed the Constitution with the name 'Dr Bhimrao Ramji Aambedkar' in hindi using his father's name 'Ramji' as his middle name, which is a common practice in Maharashtra.

Apart from addition of Ramji, the UP state government has also announced a change in the Hindi spelling of Ambedkar so that the Hindi spelling would reflect the pronunciation of 'Aambedkar'. The English spelling would remain unchanged.

Director of Babasahib Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Mahasabha, Dr Lalji Prasad Nirmal said that the campaign had been initiated by Governor Ram Naik in December 2017 who wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Mahasabha regarding the changes.

"Ramji was his father's name. As per common practice in Maharashtra, father's name is used as a middle name for sons," he said.

"The main point is the way the name should be pronounced. While its English spelling is correct, the spelling will have to change in Hindi, as will the pronunciation.," Nirmal added.

The direction was issued by Jitendra Kumar, the principal secretary of the general administration department, taking cognizance of the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution according to which Dr BR Ambedkar's name is written as Dr Bhimrao Ramji Aambedkar.

The state government has "directed that all records, documents related to the government will now have his correct name", the stated the direction.
