The Saket District Court in New Delhi on Saturday framed charges against environmentalist RK Pachauri in a sexual harassment case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Charu Gupta put Pachauri on trial framed charges under sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (making physical contact, unwelcome and sexually coloured remarks) and 509 (teasing and using vulgar gesture and actions) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The complainant, a former colleague of Pachauri, has also been summoned to appear in court. The court has fixed January 4 and 5 for the recording of evidence.

Complainant’s lawyer Prashant Mendiratta told the media that his client will file an appeal against the dropping of charges under sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 341 (wrongful restraint), 354 (D) (stalking) and 354 (B) (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe).

Pachouri pleading to the court said, “My age is 78 years, please expedite the matter.”

A chargesheet against Pachauri was filed on March 1, 2016, under Nirbhaya Act.

A 29-year-old research assistant had accused Pachauri of sexual harassment in February 2015. Teri had sent Pachauri on an indefinite leave in 2016 following which Ajay Mathur was appointed as the new director general of the Delhi-based research institute.
