The Delhi Police on Tuesday arrested a 21-year-old for allegedly raping a minor in Shahadra’s Seemapuri area of the national capital.

A senior police officer told the media that the girl was playing outside her residence at around 10.30 pm on Monday when the neighbor (accused) took her to the bushes near the DLF Chowk and raped her. The victim was bleeding when she returned home. On being questioned by her mother, she narrated her ordeal. A case was registered at the Seemapuri police station under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said.

A senior police official told News World India, “The girl is stable now and the accused has been arrested. No foreign object was found inside her when she was brought to the Police Station, she was operated upon for her injuries and now she is stable.”

Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal tweeted, “Just met with the 7-year-old rape survivor who was brutally raped in Seemapuri yesterday by a 22-year-old man. He took her to a park, inserted water pipe inside her private part & then raped her. The girl is very critical, has bled incessantly & was operated upon. The mother is a single parent and is very poor.”

She further wrote, “Cannot describe the pain the little girl was experiencing. Already malnourished, she has a long struggle ahead. We are going to support her in her legal fight to ensure death penalty to her culprits. Will file compensation application & shall make all efforts to rehabilitate her.

Taking a dig at the authorities and the government, she said, “But who will ensure no more rapes in Delhi? Despite my indefinite fast & law created for ensuring death penalty to rapists of children, it's yet to be implemented in Delhi. Delhi Police still lacks 66K personnel, fast-track courts yet to be created & Centre yet to take cognizance!
