Former President Pranab Mukherjee has been sent a notice by Delhi High court seeking response over the petition demanding the deletion of certain portions from his book 'Turbulent Years 1980-1996' published in 2016 for allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments.

On the plea of a social worker and a group of lawyers, Justice Pratibha M Singh has issued a notice to the former President asking for a response on a suit seeking deletion of some references to the 1992 demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

For further hearing, the matter has been listed on July 30. The plea was filed in 2016 but got rejected by the lower court on November 30, 2016. The court then called for the trial court records of the suit after the plaintiffs in September last year.

Appearing for the plaintiffs, advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain had argued that the lower court wrongly dismissed the suit on the grounds that there was no cause of action. The President’s counsel, however, had opposed the plea before the trial court and said it was not maintainable.

He contended before the high court that there was the cause of action when the book was published and also after September 5, 2016, when the two-month notice issued by the plaintiffs for deletion of portions of the book had expired.

The plaintiffs’ advocates had claimed before the trial court that a civil suit can be filed against the President during his tenure in respect of any act done by him in his "personal capacity."
