James Bond famed Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan has been served a showcause notice by Delhi Government asking him to explain why he appeared in a paan masala commercial.

The health department of Delhi on Monday served a notice to the actor under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003, for showing up in a 'surrogate advertisement' for an Indian paan masala brand.

As per reports, the notice states that paan masala contains areca nut, or supari, which is a cancer-causing agent, and Brosnan, as an “actor who is a role model for lakhs of people especially youngsters, should not indulge in the promotion of such hazardous products”.

“We have issued the notice to Pierce Brosnan through the company, and also reached out to him via social media platforms,” Additional Director (Health) S K Arora told Indian Express.

Brosnan has 10 days to respond. As per Arora, if Brosnan does not respond to the show-cause notice, the actor could face a fine of Rs 5,000 or two years in prison or both.

The advertisement had created a furor on social media after it was first aired.

The veteran actor had come out with a statement saying he was shocked and saddened by the events.

"As a man who has spent decades championing women’s healthcare and environmental protection, I was distressed to learn of Pan Bahar’s unauthorized and deceptive use of my image to endorse their range of pan masala products,” the statement read. “I would never have entered into an agreement to promote a product in India that is dangerous to one’s health.”

As per Brosnan, he was supposed to advertise a 'breath freshener/tooth whitener' which wouldn’t include an ingredient that turns saliva red.

Brosnan said he agreed to advertise a single product only, and that it was presented as all-natural containing neither tobacco, supari, nor any other harmful ingredient.

“Having endured, in my own personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women’s healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering,” the statement concluded.
