At least 9 CRPF personnel have been killed, and another 5 injured in an IED blast by Naxals in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. From the injured, 3 are reportedly in critical condition.

Special DG Anti Naxal Operations DM Awasthi in a statement said that a patrolling vehicle had been going from Kistaram to Palodi in an anti-landmine vehicle which was targeted by Naxals with an IED. He added that extra forces have reached the location and there is currently no firing going on.

The Improvised explosive device (IED) attack took place on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel of the 212 battalion in the Kistaram area of Sukma. The attack comes 11 days after security personnel killed 10 alleged Naxalites in the state, and 6 months after 25 CRPF jawans were killed in one of the deadliest attacks by Naxalites/Maoist rebels.

Earlier this month, the CRPF for the first time set up 3 permanent camps in the Abujhmadh forests in Chhattisgarh which are considered to be a Maoist hotbed, to launch 'surgical' operations against the ultras, a year after the forces lost 37 personnel in 2 ambushes.

Until then, security forces would only take patrols inside the 4,000 sq km Abujhmadh forest area, stay for a few days and come back, since there was no support system within the forest.
