Delhi’s Patiala House Court adjourned the Aircel Maxis deal case till 11th January in both CBI and ED cases and also extended the protection of P Chidambaram and his son Karti, on Tuesday.

The decision came after ASG Tushar Mehta sought time to collate and collect more documents related to the case.

Chidambaram had filed the plea for protection from arrest in the ED case on May 30 this year after which he got relief from the court on various occasions.

Earlier this month, the Delhi court had extended protection for the Chidambaram father-son duo till 26 November.

The CBI is probing alleged irregularities in grant of FIPB approval in Aircel-Maxis deal, while the ED is probing alleged money-laundering related to the deal.

The ED filed a reply to Chidambaram's plea for anticipatory bail in the case, maintaining that his custodial interrogation was necessary as he was evasive and non-cooperative in the probe.

The CBI, in its reply, said that he was not cooperating in the investigations.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a supplementary chargesheet in the Patiala House Court against the former finance minister and eight others in the Rs 3,500-crore Aircel Maxis money laundering case in October. The court had called Chidambaram “Accused No 1”.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had named nine accused in the case including Chidambaram, S Bhaskaraman and four Maxis companies.
