Convicted In 2 Murder Cases, Self-Styled Godman Rampal Sentenced To Life Imprisonment

Self-Styled godman 'Sant' Rampal was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Haryana's Hisar in connection with the murder of 4 women and a child who were found dead in his Satlok Ashram on November 19, 2014.

Rampal, who was also convicted in the murder case of a woman in Satlok Ashram in Barwala on November 18, 2014 will receive the quantum of punishment for the second conviction on Wednesday.

He had been found guilty in both the cases by the court of additional district and sessions judge (ADJ) DR Chalia in Hisar last week, where the verdict was announced amidst heavy security, with a deployment of nearly 1,800 policemen.

In November 2014, Thousands of Rampal's followers clashed with police when they came to arrest him at the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on contempt of court charges.

As Police forces attempted to arrest Rampal, nearly 15,000 of his followers at the Satlok Ashram in Barwala, Hisar formed a protective ring around him resulting in a standoff between Rampal's followers and the police. A subsequent 'siege' was laid and after a two-week standoff, Rampal was finally arrested. The clashes leading up to his arrest resulted in the death of 6 people, an injury to more than 200.

Rampal was arrested later on November 19 on charges of murder, attempt to murder, conspiracy, holding illegal weapons and abetting suicide.

In August 2017, Rampal was acquitted in 2 criminal cases by the Hisar court, under IPC sections 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of his public function), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 353 (Assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty).
