The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday pledged its support to the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra led by the Congress party. The impeachment motion comes months after 4 Justices of the Supreme Court called a press conference on January 12 against the CJI Misra, alleging discrimination in case allotment.

SP national spokesperson Ghanshyam Tiwari confirmed the support of the party to the impeachment motion in a statement to ANI, saying, "SP stands with impeachment motion which is about bringing independence & unquestionable integrity to the judiciary."

According to reports, the petition for the impeachment of CJI Misra would be submitted to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu in the coming 1-2 days. To submit an impeachment motion in the Rajya Sabha, at least 50 signatures of members of the House are required.

The draft petition, as per sources, argues that CJI Misra has not properly addressed the issues raised by the 4 senior judges of the Supreme Cout, namely Justices J S Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph in the press conference.

Sources quoted by The Indian Express said that Congress leaders are attempting to collect signatures of other Rajya Sabha members belonging to DMK, NCP and Left parties, which had conveyed their support on the issue.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is currently in Delhi to meet with Opposition parties may also add the support of her Trinamool Congress party to the impeachment motion.

“I can only say that Trinamool Congress will go with whatever decision the other parties take on the impeachment of the CJI. After all, one cannot ignore what the four judges had to say,” Banerjee said to media.
