Unofficially, frequent reports have suggested that Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will be elevated to the post of President of the party, however, the internal elections have been repeatedly delayed once again.

As the Election Commission has issued a directive to the Congress to complete their internal elections by the end of the year, sources suggest that the internal elections will take place after the Gujarat state assembly elections.

Although no indication has been given on when a meeting of the Congress Working Committee will take place, Congress leaders have said that the election for the party chief would likely take place after the Gujarat elections.

Earlier, reports had suggested that the internal elections would take place after Diwali, ahead of the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly polls, which would have boosted campaigning efforts in both the poll-bound states.

Once again the internal elections were expected to take place between November 9 and 19, however, Congress President Sonia Gandhi is said to be on a brief trip to Goa while Rahul Gandhi continues with campaigning in Gujarat.

A senior leader said that the possibility of the Congress internal polls taking place ahead of the Gujarat elections was unlikely, saying that it would create an "unnecessary distraction" for party workers. However, as the Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat election results may affect the internal polls, other Congress leaders are reportedly pressing for earlier internal elections.

Rahul Gandhi is unanimously thought to be the next president of the Congress party, taking over the role from his mother. Other Congress leaders have also opined, that who else is there to take the reins?
