The Opposition BJP and Congress in Odisha, slamming the state BJD government have called for a state-wide shutdown on Wednesday, over the suicide of a 14-year-old gangrape victim who claimed to have been raped by '4 men in uniform'. While the Congress has called for a dawn-to-dusk shutdown, BJP announced a 12-hour strike from 6 AM to 6 PM.

Schools and colleges will be remaining closed for the safety of students in view of the shutdown and elaborate security arrangements have also been made, said police.

The leaders of both the opposition parties said that the state-wide shutdown is being observed to protest against the failure of the state government in giving justice to the girl and to demand a CBI probe into the incident.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Prasad Harichandan also called for the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for failing to provide justice to the girl, who was forced to commit suicide. Harichandan claimed that the girl committed suicide 100 days after the gangrape as she was 'mentally tortured' by police, doctors and other officials.

"The girl had earlier claimed that there was threat to her life. She was forced to take the drastic step of ending her life as she was denied justice," said Congress Chief Tara Prasad Bahinipati.

BJP leader Prithviraj Harichandan said that the protests would continue till the girl gets justice.

The 14-year-old tribal girl, a student of Class 9, claimed that she had been raped by 4 men in combat uniforms on October 10 last year in Kunduli in the Maoist-hit Koraput district when she was returning home to Musaguda village around 5 km away. Denied justice even 100 days after the gangrape, she committed suicide.
