December 31st, New Year's eve is one of the biggest partying nights of the year. While Mumbai has been permitted to host New Year's eve parties till 5 AM, right wing groups in Karnataka's Mangaluru are calling for hotels in the city to be shutdown before midnight on New Year's eve as the groups believe such parties "encourage drugs and sex".

The self-appointed "moral police" consisting of right wing groups such as Bajrang Dal and the VHP have approached the Mangaluru police with their demands on closing New Year's eve parties.

Karnataka Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy, however, has said that people have no authority to make such statements.

"The Bajrang Dal and other people have no authority to say this. Every year they say like this. They have no right," he said.

A performance of actress Sunny Leone at a New Year's eve party in Bengaluru had also been called off after protests by the Kannada Rakshana Vedike Yuva Sena which claimed that Sunny's presence would be an "assault" on "Indian culture".

After the protests by the Sena, the Bengaluru police denied permission as well saying that they did so because they felt law and order may become an issue.

Sunny Leone herself tweeted that since the police had said that they could not guarantee her safety or that of those attending she would not be doing the performance.

Since reports of mass molestation had surfaced last year in the city's Mahatma Gandhi Road area, the police are taking extra precautions this year.
