A Class 10 student from the Shri Bharti School in Baranpura in Gujarat's Vadodara has been taken into custody under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act in connection with the murder of a Class 9 student from the same school, an official said on Saturday.

The 14-year-old victim, Dev Tadvi, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in the washroom of the school on Friday. Scanning of CCTV footage showed that Tadvi had entered the washroom with the accused, shortly before he was found dead.

The 17-year-old accused was arrested from Valsad near the Maharashtra border, around 230 km from Vadodara while he was attempting to flee.

According to reports, the accused did not have any personal animosity towards Tadvi but murdered him out of anger against the school, in an attempt to close it down.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) R S Bhagora, in a statement to media on Sunday said that the students had been given homework and the accused was scolded for not bringing his, so he decided to 'do something' to close the school.

"They were given homework, accused was scolded as he didn't bring his. Then he decided to do something to close the school. So he did this. His parents say he's violent in nature," said DCP RS Bhagora.

Vadodara police commissioner Manoj Shashidhar revealed that the accused had displayed behavioural problems in the past as well.

“The accused had no animosity towards Tadvi. He barely knew Tadvi, who had taken admission only 10 days back. The accused had displayed behavioural problems on several occasions in the past for which he was scolded by his teachers,” said Shashidhar.

“The accused wanted to take revenge on the school and wanted it to shut down. He found Tadvi when he reached the school on Friday. The victim could have been any student,” he added.

While a 12-inch knife was recovered from near the victim's body in the school toilet, a satchel was recovered from the roof of a temple next to the building that contained more sharp-edged weapons, chilli powder solution and a blood stained shirt.

The Vadodara school incident has marked similarities to the murder of 7-year-old Pradyuman Thakur in Gurugram's Ryan International School last year in September, where the Class 11 suspect allegedly slit the throat of the Class 2 student Pradyuman. The accused allegedly murdered Pradyuman to delay exams and an upcoming parent-teacher meeting.
