Clashes Erupt At JNU After Left Sweeps Polls, Newly Elect President Balaji Assaulted [WATCH]

Hours after the left alliance swept away the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union polls, reports of clashes between the left and RSS backed ABVP surfaced the media on Monday.

According to media reports, newly elected JNUSU president N. Sai Balaji has alleged that the members of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad assaulted him during the early hours of Monday.

Bollywood Actor Swara Bhasker shared a video of the incident and tweeted, "News of alleged violence by ABVP goons in JNU last night. Newly elected JNUSU president Sai Baba and ex president Geeta Kumari assaulted. Ex Student Abhinay and student Pawan brutally beaten. DCP South Delhi & Delhi Police hope u are taking cognisance.”

JNU Student Leader Shehla Rashid tweeted, "ABVP should change its Twitter handle from ABVPVoice to ABVPViolence and its full form from Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad to Akhil Bhartiya Violence Parishad."

A police complaint has been filed by both AISA and ABVP at the Vasant Vihar Police Station.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Devender Arya told the media, “Yesterday at around 3 a.m, PCR calls about a scuffle between students in JNU were received. Subsequently, we have had discussions with university authorities,  students and university professors, Complaints have been received in Vasant Kunj North Police Statio. Legal action is being taken on merit. The situation is under control now and normal. Police arrangements are in place."

Balaji, while speaking to a daily newspaper said, “I was threatened by the mob and fearing my safety some students asked me to sit inside the PCR vehicle that had been called. However, the mob led by Ashutosh Mishra and Saurabh Sharma stopped the PCR vehicle and got a ABVP student to sit beside me. These two students were repeatedly stopping the PCR and threatening me. To my surprise, Saurabh Sharma stopped the PCR between Jhelum and Sutlej (hostels) and the ABVP student sitting inside the PCR van opened the door. Upon opening, more threats were given to me and I was physically assaulted inside the PCR van by ABVP students.”

The Polling Results

From the Left Alliance, N Sai Balaji has been elected as President, Sarika Chaudhary as Vice President, Aejaz Ahmed Rather as the General Secretary and Amutha Jayadeep as the Joint Secretary.
