Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday received the highest environmental honour, the UNEP Champions of the Earth in the national capital.

The Prime Minister was presented with the honour by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi. After receiving the honour, PM Modi while addressing the gathering said, “It is an honour for Indians. Indians are committed to save the environment.”

He further said, “Climate and calamity are directly related to culture; if climate is not the focus of culture, calamity cannot be prevented. When I say ‘Sabka Saath,’ I also include nature in it.”

The award was announced on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly which was held in New York last week.

Speaking at the award ceremony, Guterres said, "PM Modi recognises climate change poses a direct existential threat to us. He knows what we need to do to avoid a catastrophe. Other leaders also recognise, know and understand, but the difference is that he not only recognizes but he acts."

PM Modi has been awarded for his leadership of the International Solar Alliance and pledge to eliminate single use plastic in India by 2022.

The Champions of the Earth title is presented annually to outstanding leaders from government, civil and private sector for their extraordinary contribution towards environment.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Modi have been jointly recognised in the Policy Leadership category for their pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance and promoting new areas of levels of cooperation on environmental action, including Macron's work on the Global Pact for the Environment and Modi's unprecedented pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in India by 2022

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pledge to ban all single use plastic in India was also recognized. Cochin International Airport has also been honoured this year with the award for Entrepreneurial Vision, for its leadership in the use of sustainable energy
