Government will push the deadline to link aadhar with government schemes and bank accounts from December 31 to March 31.

Attorney General KK Venugopal representing the Centre in the Aadhar matter told the Supreme Court on Thursday. This extension however, will apply only to those who do not have the Unique Identification Number yet.

The Attorney General stated that the deadline of February 6 for linking Aadhar with mobile numbers couldn’t be extended as it has been mandated by the Apex Court. The government will issue a notification for the extension of the deadline on Friday.

Senior Advocate Shyam Divan appearing for the petitioners objected to the conditional extension.

He asked the court to either list the case next week for interim orders or direct the government to give an undertaking that no coercive steps will be taken even against those who have Aadhar.

The Judges agreed to list the case for interim relief next week.

Activists have petitioned the Supreme Court challenging the validity of Aadhar and have asked the apex court to stop the Centre from making the linking of Aadhaar mandatory for bank accounts and mobile phone numbers, contending that it violates people's right to privacy and can be misused.
