The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday wrote to the Vice-Chancellors of all universities to celebrate Surgical Strike Day on September 29 to mark the event along the Line of Control that day in 2016.

The letter read, “All higher education institutions with NCC units shall organise a special parade on 29th September, after which the NCC commander shall address them on the modalities of protection of the borders,” says the UGC letter. “The university/colleges may organise a meeting, calling ex-servicemen who will sensitise the students about the sacrifices made by the armed forces in protecting the borders.”

Senior Congress Leader Kapil Sibbal calling out the move yet another Jumla (False Promise) of the BJP Government, Sibbal said, “Is this meant to educate or to serve BJP’s political ends? Will UGC dare celebrate 8th November as Surgical Strike Day, depriving the poor of their livelihoods?”

Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee, while criticising the move, said, “BJP is now using the army to create an agenda. We respect army. But, why Surgical Strike day needs to be observed, why not martyrs’ day? We do not support this kind of things and if we get any order from UGC we will not implement.”

Earlier in 2016, the Indian Army carried out surgical strike on Pakistan consequently eliminating at least 38 terrorists. The precision attacks were carried out by the Indian Army after 19 soldiers were martyred in Pakistan-sponsored attack.
