CBI Detains BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar Accused In Unnao Rape Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after taking over the probe into Uttar Pradesh's Unnao rape case, detained the main accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Friday early morning for questioning.

The Sengar, MLA of Unnao has been accused of rape, intimidation and assault and had a case lodged against him by the Unnao police on Thursday under sections 363, 366, 376 and 506 of Indian Penal Code pertaining to rape, abduction, and intimidation and provisions of POCSO Act.

The FIR against Sengar was filed on the basis of a preliminary report by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the state government to look into the case and check the veracity of the charges levelled by the rape victim against the MLA. The SIT had also been directed to probe the assault on the rape survivor's father and his subsequent custodial death.

The Allahabad High Court took up suo motu cognisance of the case on Wednesday and on Thursday took a strong notice of the delay in the accused MLA's arrest.

So far, 5 persons, including the MLA's brother Atul Singh Sengar have already been arrested in the case, while 5 policemen of the Makhi police station, and two doctors of district hospital had been suspended for laxity in the case.

The probe into the Unnao rape and assault case was handed over to the CBI by the state government after the intervention of the PMO to speed up the proceedings amidst protests and controversy.

A 17-year-old had accused the BJP MLA and his brother of gangraping her last year, and alleged that the authorities did not pursue the case to bring her justice. Her suicide attempt last week brought her issue to the forefront and the ruling BJP party in the UP state and centre were criticised for not acting against the accused, who was a BJP MLA.
