CBDT Chief Sushil Chandra Appointed As The Election Commissioner

President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday appointed Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Sushil Chandra as the news Election Commissioner.

Satya Pinisetty, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, tweeted the appointment of Sushil Chandra.

Chandra, an IIT graduate, is a 1980 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre). Chandra’s role was crucial in the Union budget as direct taxes remained the biggest element of the annual Finance Bill. The appointment came ahead of this year's general elections, which is due by May.

The post had fallen vacant after the appointment of the then Election Commissioner Sunil Arora as Chief Election Commissioner on superannuation of his predecessor O.P. Rawat in December last year. Former bureaucrat Ashok Lavasa is the first and senior-most Election Commissioner.

The Commission has also been pressurized lately by the opposition who alleged that the Electronic Voting Machines had been tweaked to benefit the BJP in various states. The parties have been demanding a return to ballot paper, which the Commission had firmly denied.

Election Commissioners are appointed for a term of six years, or till the age of 65 - whichever is earlier.
