BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Thursday raised the issue of the 52 Indians detained as illegal immigrants in the US state of Oregon with Nikki Haley, the US envoy to the United Nations currently on a visit to India.

Sirsa who is also the general secretary of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC), interacted directly with Haley while she was visiting the Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib in New Delhi with the US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster.

In a series of tweets, the BJP MLA Sirsa related his meeting with the Indian-American Haley.

"Heartwarming pics. Meeting Nikki Haley Ji & US Ambassador to India has been a humbling experience. They both keenly did Langar Sewa. Nikki Ji conversed in Punjabi also. I would always cherish her joy on seeing Deg, getting Karah Parshad and mentioning her childhood & mom’s cooking," tweeted Sirsa.

"We are humbled to have Nikki Haley Ji and US Ambassador to India paying obeisance at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahab. We requested Nikki Ji to address the problem of 52 Indians detained in Oregon Jail," he said.

"Nikki Haley Ji immediately took note and discussed it with US Ambassador to India to resolve the issue. We will be meeting Mr Ken Juster soon to discuss the matter in detail," Sirsa said.

Earlier in June, reports came to light that 52 Indians, mostly Sikhs or Christians were being held at a detention centre in US's Oregon as a part of a contingent of 123 illegal immigrants seeking asylum. The asylum seekers from India claimed that they fled due to religious persecution from the Hindu majority, but were stopped as a part of US President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration.
