The BJP has called for a state-wide strike in Kerala on Sunday following the death of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker Rajesh Edavakode who died after he was brutally attacked and had his palm chopped off in Thiruvananthapuram.

Rajesh, 34, died in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram after the attack which took place around 9 pm on Saturday. Senior leaders of the BJP had visited the hospital on late Saturday night.

Inspector General of Police Manoj Abraham was quoted as saying, "The attack was by a gang of men involving CPM (Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists. However, there was a long history of enmity between one of the accused and the victim. We are also probing any angle of political motive."

Three of the assailants have been identified by police as Manikuttan, Vipin and Vijith and all three are reportedly CPM workers.

Clashes between the BJP and CPM in Kerala have become disturbingly frequent as the BJP and RSS attempt to carve out a base for themselves in a state dominated by the ruling Left and the Congress.

Recently, in Thiruvananthapuram, a state BJP office was attacked and then a CPM state secretary's son's house was attacked. After the series of attacks, 6 RSS activists were arrested as were 4 CPM activists including a local councilor, on charges of 'creating law and order problems.'
