Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday ordered a CBI probe in the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case.

The chief minister asked state chief secretary, home secretary and DGP to hand over the case to CBI.

A press release stating the order said, “The government is committed to an impartial inquiry into the Muzaffarpur shelter home incident where a very despicable incident has happened. An inquiry was going on but an atmosphere of doubt was being created so Chief Minister has directed the State Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of police to hand over the case to CBI.”

Reports of repeated sexual abuse of inmates at the shelter home in Muzaffarpur surfaced in the wake of a social audit by Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). Education body had carried out a social audit of shelter homes running across the state of Bihar. In its report to the state government, it alleged abuse of inmates.

Bihar Director General Of Police (DGP) KS Dwivedi, told the media that the medical examination of 29 girls out of the 42 shelter home inmates confirmed that they were sexually exploited.

More than 10 people, including all staff members of the shelter home and some government officials, have so far been arrested in this connection while all the inmates have been shifted to other districts.

Political Drama Over The Case

Earlier on Wednesday, Shiba Kumari, wife of district Child Protection Officer Ravi Raushan who was arrested, said the husband of the Social Welfare Department minister Manju Verma was visiting the shelter home frequently.

She had said, “I demand a CBI inquiry into the case. My husband is being framed to save some big people. He was doing his duty honestly. I demand an investigation into the role of Chandeshwar Verma, the husband of social welfare minister Manju Verma.”

Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma refusing to the allegations said, “It is a disgusting example of a politically motivated smear campaign. Nearly a month has passed since the official was arrested and the allegation has been made only now, on a day when the Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav visited the town.”
