The 19-year-old student studying for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exams was granted justice on Saturday when 4, accused of raping on her way from coaching centre for three hours on October were awarded life imprisonment by a fast-track court.

The victim has accused a bunch of boys of gang-raping her near Bhopal's Habibganj railway station, following which her mobile phone and jewellery were snatched by the rapists. She also accused the men of attempting to strangle her who later left the crime scene believing that she was dead.

A massive outrage was triggered by the gang-rape which prompted Madhya Pradesh police to set up a special investigation team (SIT) for looking into the matter. Four people named Golu alias Bihari Chadhar, Amar alias Ghuntu, Rajesh Chetram alias Raju and Ramesh Mehra alias Raju were arrested soon after the probe started.

All the accused were booked under IPC sections 376 D (gang-rape), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) along with charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and causing injury.

The decision came after Madhya Pradesh court's order of ensuring a day-to-day basis hearings by sessions judge after the charge sheet filing on November 16. The case caused an uproar among the masses when a flawed medical report stated that the ‘sex was consensual’.
