The 8-year-old girl brutally gangraped and killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua is yet to receive justice, however, a 6-year-old girl raped and murdered in Bengaluru is finally receiving justice, one year later.

A man in Bengaluru, convicted of raping and murdering a 6-year-old girl on April 20, 2017 was given the death penalty by a city court on Saturday.

Judge M Lathakumari awarded death penalty to 35-year-old Anil Balagar for killing the child, 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping her, and a fine of Rs 10,000. The High Court would be required to confirm the sentence, until then Balagar will have time to appeal against the order.

A father of two daughters, Balagar was convicted of murdering the girl after raping her inside his Girinagar residence in April 2017.

“The girl was playing outside her grandfather’s home, which is opposite Balagar’s house. She went missing at 6.15pm and attempts to find her went in vain. Around 8pm, Balagar informed people that he had to leave for his native place,” public prosecutor Channa Venkataramanappa said to TOI.

The convict's mobile phone had been switched off soon after he left.

“Three days later, foul smell emanating from Balagar’s house caught the attention of neighbours. On breaking it open, police found the girl’s body,” the public prosecutor said.

Investigations confirmed that the girl had been raped before being smothered to death with a pillow.

Coincidently, the death penalty to Balagar comes soon after an ordinance was passed by the Cabinet and President Ram Nath Kovind awarding death penalty to convicted rapists of minors below the age of 12 years. But the public prosecutor specified there was no connection between the sentencing and the Ordinance.
