Rape cases continue to occur in India with an alarming frequency, with even toddlers as young as a 6-years-old falling victim to sexual predators. A recent case in Uttar Pradesh has brought to light shocking inhumanity as a 100-year-old woman, one of the oldest residents of her district, was allegedly raped. The elderly victim died soon after.

A 35-year-old man, Ankit Punia, who has been identified as the assailant, reportedly barged into the elderly victim's house in a village located on the outskirts of Meerut around midnight on Sunday and raped her. The victim's family members revealed that the old woman, who was already bed-ridden, was so feeble she could barely raise an alarm as she was raped.

"She was very weak. She could only manage to utter feeble cries. We rushed to where she was and were horrified to find the man forcing himself on her," said her 40-year-old grandson.

The victim was rushed to a district hospital in critical condition but passed away soon after the medical examination on Monday. Doctors at the district hospital said that the elderly patient came in a "really bad condition", and that swabs have been sent to a forensic lab in Lucknow to confirm rape.

PC Sharma, station officer at Jani police station, said, "We immediately reached the spot and called an ambulance to transport the old woman to the district hospital. An FIR has been filed against Punia under IPC sections IPC 458 (house-breaking after preparation for assault) and 376 (rape). Besides, relevant sections of the SC/ST Act have also been slapped against the accused as the victim was a Dalit."

Meanwhile, villagers have sought the death sentence for Punia who has so far been sent to jail.
