Former Indian Football Captain Bhaichung Bhutia has resigned from the membership and all posts of the Trinamool Congress Party. The sportsperson turned politician has announced to quit politics.

There were reports of Bhutia being crippled by the party’s position on the controversy over the demand of separate Gorkhaland. Bhutia, however, has not explained any reason for his resignation. He entered politics in 2011 after taking retirement from football and for this Bhutia chose the same state from where he gained popularity as a player. He joined Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress

On Monday, taking to his official Twitter handle Bhaichung Bhutia shared a post that reads, “As of today I have officially resigned from the membership and all the official and political posts of All India Trinamool Congress party. I am no longer a member or associated with any political party in India. #politics."

In 2014, Bhutia contested from Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat from TMC ticket but had to face defeat. BJP’s SS Ahluwalia won the election.

In 2016, Bhutia tried his hands in assembly elections but despite the tremendous Mamata wave, he couldn’t make it and Ashok Bhattacharya of the left front defeated him from Siliguri seat.

While Bhutia says that he has quit politics, there are speculations that he might be warming up to BJP
