At least 2 Assam Rifles soldiers were killed and 4 others injured in an ambush by suspected terrorists in the Mon district of Nagaland on Sunday, an Assam Rifles official said. The deceased have been identified as Havildar Fateh Singh Negi and Sepoy Hungnga Konyak.

Around 3 PM on Sunday near the Aboi area, around 35km from the district headquarters along the Indo-Myanmar border, armed terrorists ambushed a team of 6 Assam Rifles personnel, the public relations officer of the Inspector General of Assam Rifles said.

According to reports, the Assam Rifles personnel and troopers from the territorial army had been on their way to fetch water from a nearby river when they were attacked by suspected terrorists using grenades and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)

The security forces retaliated to the terrorists, however, the casualties suffered by the terrorists are yet to be ascertained. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but reports suggest that National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) rebels are suspected of being behind the attacks. The NSCN(K) terrorists were earlier suspected of killing 8 Assam Rifles soldiers in 2015 in a similar manner as the attack on Sunday.

The Union Home Ministry had last month alerted an escalation of attacks on security forces along the Indo-Myanmar border.
