Mistaken for being kidnappers, 2 men in their 30s were beaten to death by a mob on Saturday evening in Assam's Karbi Anglong. The 5 main accused have been arrested.

Rumours regarding the presence of child kidnappers in Dokmoka in Assam's district of West Karbi Anglong began floating on social media, after which locals attacked Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das believing them to be the kidnappers.

According to reports, the locals spotted "two suspicious" persons in the Panjari Kachari Village who were reportedly heading for Kangthilangso, around 10 kilometres from Dengaon, which is known for its scenic waterfalls.

Around 8 PM, locals attacked the SUV Nath and Das were travelling in and pulled them out of the car. The men tried to escape, but they were tied up and brutally assaulted, killing them on the spot.

In a video that surfaced later on, Nilotpal Das can be seen pleading with the locals.

"Don't kill me...please don't beat me. I am an Assamese. Believe me, I am speaking the truth. My father's name is Gopal Chandra Das and mother's name is Radhika Das...please let me go," Das says in the video.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the incident in a statement.

"It is condemnable that people are being killed after being influenced by rumours and superstition," the Chief Minister said, and directed the Additional Director General of Assam Police (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwal to look into it.

"We have the cellphones of both the victims as well as the mobile phones used to shoot the attack. We have begun our investigation and the accused will be arrested soon," said Agrawal.

While Nilotpal Das was a sound engineer working out of Mumbai and Goa, Abhijeet Nath had his own business.
