After 5 years, a Jodhpur court on Wednesday convicted self-styled Godman Asaram 'Bapu' for raping a 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur, bringing relief for the family in the long-drawn case.

"Asaram is convicted, we have got justice. I want to thank everyone who supported us in this fight. Now I hope he will get strict punishment. I also hope the witnesses who were murdered or kidnapped get justice," said the father of Shahjahanpur victim to media after the conviction.

The case has been mired in controversy as over the past 4 years of the trial against Asaram, 9 witnesses have been attacked and 3 have died.

Asaram and his 4 aides were accused in the case, out of which Asaram, Shilpi and Sharad were convicted and Shiva and Prakash were acquitted by the court for the rape incident that allegedly took place on August 15, 2013 at an Asaram ashram near Jodhpur.

After the conviction, spokesperson for Asaram, Neelam Dubey issued a statement saying, "We will discuss with our legal team and then decide our future course of action. We have confidence in our judiciary."

The verdict on Wednesday came after a total of 12 failed bail applications on the behalf of the 77-year-old Asaram, out of which 6 were rejected by the trial court, 3 by the Rajasthan High Court and 3 by the Supreme Court.

To prevent any violence after the verdict, security was boosted in Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana which have large numbers of Asaram followers, as well as in Uttar Pradesh where the rape survivor lives. The judgement was also pronounced from within the Central Jail in Jodhpur and media entry was barred.
