At least five personnel of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were reported dead while several others were injured after a huge boulder crushed an ITBP vehicle on Friday in Likabali town of Arunachal Pradesh.

The incident occurred earlier on Friday when a boulder, loosened by monsoon rains, rolled down a mountain and hit the bus carrying at least 20 personnel of the Indo Tibetan Border Police.

A senior police officer while addressing the media on this incident said, “The boulder rolled down the mountain slope and smashed the mini-bus carrying 20 ITBP personnel. Four ITBP personnel died on the spot. So far, three bodies have been retrieved by a joint rescue team of the ITBP and the state police, who are being assisted by locals.

Four of the ITBP personnel died on the spot while one more died in Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH), later in the day.

This is the second landslide-related incident in the state within five days. The death toll due to landslides this monsoon has risen to nine.

The police also told the media that a rescue operation is difficult in the area due to stones rolling down from the mountain and the identity of the dead ITBP personnel was yet to be confirmed
