Amidst Increasing 'Encounters', UP CM Yogi Says, Guns Must Be Answered With Guns

Amidst a steep increase in the number of encounters taking place in Uttar Pradesh and allegations of 'fake encounters', Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said that guns are the answer to those who believe in the language of guns.

"Everyone should be guaranteed security, but those who want to disturb the peace of the society and believe in the gun should be given the answer in the language of the gun itself. I would tell the administration, that there is no need to worry on this," the UP CM said in Gorakhpur.

On February 3, a UP policeman opened fire on two youths in Noida, after which the Samajwadi Party accused the Uttar Pradesh Police of 'staging encounters' in order to receive promotions, adding that the youths were victims of a 'fake encounter'.

In the first week of February, nearly 24 wanted criminals were arrested and one gangster killing in 15 police encounters in 10 districts of the state. Encounters were reported from Muzaffarnagar, Gorakhpur, Bulandshahr, Shamli, Hapur, Meerut, Saharanpur, Baghpat, Kanpur and Lucknow.

Data from the DGP headquarters has shown that around 1,142 encounters were recorded between March 20, 2017 and January 31, 2018. BJP's Yogi Adityanath took charge as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 19 March 2017 in a sweeping win.
