Amarnath : Road To Baba Barfaani Reopens From Baltal And Pahalgam

Amarnath Yatra resumed from the on-foot routes of Baltal and Pahalgam on Saturday afternoon after the improvement in the weather conditions. The yatra was put on hold due to the bad weather and incessant rainfall.

The fourth batch of the Amarnath pilgrims reached the Jammu base camp. They were also prevented from moving further due to the rainfall in the region. The Baltal route originating from Srinagar is of 14 kilometres, and the Pahalgam route coming from Jammu is of about 32 kilometres.

Earlier on Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra had called for an emergency meeting at his residence to discuss the flood-like situation arising in the state. Heavy rains and inclement weather has led to the rivers rising above the danger mark. According to the media reports, air sorties have also been restarted from the Baltal base camp.

On Friday, a stretch of 100 metre and several small bridges were washed away on the route to the cave shrine of Amarnath. However, the yatra was not completely halted. Pilgrims were allowed to move whenever the weather was favourable for commutation.    

Over 2,000 pilgrims who were part of the third batch were left stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway as heavy rains triggered landslides at several places
