Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Saturday that he would be taking legal action against 'anti social elements' who have alleged that the RSS and Gadkari himself were behind the plan to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi which came to light on Friday.

Gadkari was likely referring to a tweet by Jawaharlal Nehru University students rights activist Shehla Rashid who on Saturday tweeted, "Looks like RSS/Gadkari is planning to assassinate Modi, and then blame it upon Muslims/Communists and then lynch Muslims #RajivGandhiStyle."

Around 7 hours later, Gadkari tweeted, "I would be taking legal action on anti-social elements who have made bizzare comments; attributing personal motives to me, regarding the assassination threat to PM @narendramodi."

The Pune Police had intercepted a letter on Friday which appeared to be an internal communication of Maoists talking of planning to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a 'Rajiv Gandhi-type incident', referring to the assassination of former PM Rajiv Gandhi by a suicide bomber.

The letter, dated April 18, was found from the Delhi home of Rona Wilson, an alleged Maoist who was recently arrested in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence.

Even when the letter was recovered, the Congress party dismissed the threat to PM Modi as a publicity stunt.

"I am not saying this is completely untrue but It has been PM Modi's old tactic, since he was PM, whenever his popularity declines, news of an assassination plot it planted," said Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam.
