After a long discussion and criticism, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday has approved the proposal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj.

The decision to rename the city was taken in a meeting.

Minister Siddharth Nath Singh said, “The renaming of Allahabad as Prayagraj before Kumbh came for approval in the meeting and I am happy to say Allahabad will now be known as Prayagraj.”

Earlier Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had during his visit to the city on Saturday announced that Allahabad would be renamed as Prayagraj ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela.

Singh was quoted by ToI as saying, "I had personally taken up the matter with the governor a few months back and other people, too, had expressed their desire to have the name of Allahabad reverted to its original name of Prayagraj. The cabinet gave unanimous approval to the proposal and the city will now be known as Prayagraj.”

"Prayag is a confluence of two rivers here we have a confluence of three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Therefore its name will be Prayagraj," Adityanath said.

On the other hand, the Congress Party said that the change would diminish the importance of Allahabad had in the country’s freedom movement.

The city was named Allahabad by Emperor Akbar reportedly in the 16th Century.
