Delhi court on Monday extended the interim protection to Karti Chidambaram in Aircel-Maxis case till the next date of hearing on May 2. Both Enforcement Directorate and the CBI sought time to argue on junior Chidambaram's application for an interim bail.

The court had on March 24th given interim relief to Karti Chidambaram till Monday after the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI sought time to file their responses on his anticipatory bail plea. He was asked to appear before the investigating officer whenever summoned.

The CBI has accused Karti of using his influence in getting the FIPB clearance for INX Media when his father P Chidambaram was the Finance Minister and receiving kickbacks for the same.

As per the CBI, INX Media entered into a criminal conspiracy with junior Chidambaram after the company violated FIPB norms and received letters seeking clarifications. The Bureau believes it was done to ease out the situation without being penalized.

"Karti ‘used’ his influence to manipulate a tax probe against INX Media in a case of violation of FIPB conditions to receive investment from Mauritius," CBI had said.

Alleging that Karti Chidambaram was non-cooperative, the CBI had taken him into custody following which the special court had sent Karti to Tihar Jail in March this year. He was arrested at Chennai airport on his return from London. Karti finally got bail on March 23rd.
